8 Inspiring travel destinations to top up your bucket list

Our bucket list is deep.

Heck, we can’t even see the bottom.

But we have the rest of our lives to fulfill our dream of exploring as much of this world as we can. And we’re going to do our best to do so.

If you’re as passionate about travel as we are, you know doubt have a bucket list of your own, so you can appreciate what I’m talking about and what I’ll be sharing with you today.

Our list is compiled not in an any specific order of when we’ll actually be going there, but none the less they’re on the list. If you’ve had the privilege of visiting any of these awesome destinations and you have any advice you’d like to pass along, please do so.

1. Iceland
Well this is actually a repeat. We visited Iceland for the first time in February of this year and loved it so much that we wanted to experience this most awe-inspiring island during the summer months. In a few weeks from now we’ll be on board Iceland Air headed once again to Reykjavik for another ‘photo clicking marathon,’ but enjoying it in slightly warmer temperatures.

Iceland waterfallsReykjavik is home to an impressive collection of  the most stunning waterfalls in the world. In a recent blog, I made a shortlist of the locations that we’ll be photographing during this trip – check them out here. And stay tuned to CiaoMary for more Iceland photos to come this fall.

2. Dubai
Exotic, luxurious, awe-inspiring. From the palm-tree-shaped archipelago of Palm Jumeirah, to city landscapes of soaring skyscrapers, it’s all here in this Emirate capital. I can’t wait to photograph Burj Al Arab, Burj Khalifa, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the desert, maybe capture Mary skiing the snow-laden slopes of Ski Dubai (nothing’s impossible in Dubai) and of course Dubai Mall (the largest in the world) will definitely be on Mary’s wish list.

Dubai, UAE
3. Sicily
Raise your hand if you haven’t been to Italy. If not, I encourage you to put this part of the world on your bucket list. Over the last several years we’ve devoured much of Italy, but we still haven’t ventured to the bottom of the boot – but that ends this year. In September we’ll be exploring every inch of this island including; Taormina, Catania, Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo. Stay tuned for up-to-date photos and video coming this fall.

Sicilia, Italy
4. Thailand
Beautiful images of Thailand fill the web and I’m sure that’s where it started, ‘our attraction to exotic.’ After a few days of exploring Bangkok, we’ll journey south along the Andaman coast to experience for ourselves this regions beautiful white sandy beaches and warm turquoise waters of Krabi and Phuket including the six islands of Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park.

5. Havana

It’s 50 year history of withering neglect is part of what lures us to Havana. Unlike our American neighbors, we Canadians have had the luxury of parading south to its many luxury beach resorts (Veradero anyone) during our winter months. But few have ventured to the islands capital. This will not be a ‘lie on the beach’ vacation, this is a photographer’s playground and it’s calling me. The city is intensely rich in photographic possibilities from vintage cars strutting through potholed streets, colourful houses, the people, the landscape – I can’t wait.

Havana, Cuba
6. Maldives
Stranded in the Indian Ocean, somewhere between Sri Lanka and India is home to perhaps the best beaches in the world. I’ll admit that sun, sand and luminous turquoise water is a perfect lure for this couple. But we’re not alone as millions flock to this otherwise little-known Indian Ocean paradise for the same reason. However we’ll forego the luxury resorts, preferring to island hop by public ferry, and stay in guesthouses on inhabited islands to truly experience Maldive culture and friendly local population.

7. South Pacific
Okay, we’re not fussy, we’ll go anywhere where accommodation is provided in an over-water bungalow. Anywhere in the French Polynesia, Moorea or Tahiti (as below) and even the Cook Islands and Fiji. Experiencing the South Pacific in an over-water bure has always been high on the list.  (Image: Roderick Eime)

This will be our first trip to Africa, but not our last. We’ll eventually squeeze in South Africa and a safari at some point. But right now, we’re captivated with Morocco. Casablanca, Marrakesh, Tangier, Fez, will be thoroughly explored – or at least what our timetable allows. We’ll ride the dunes of the Erg Chebbi on camel, stroll through the bustling souks of Fez filled with coloured silks and baskets of spices, visit a hammam in Marrakesh, will we have time to hit the beach in Essaouira… the adventure awaits.

I love this list! Mainly because I have been to Iceland & Thailand so I am 1/4th of the way there! Haha!
I hope to make it to Morocco next year so that is awesome. I have friends that live in Dubai so I may hit that up next year too but it kind of rubs me wrong as a Middle East version of Vegas!
As for Cuba, I would love to go but I am 2nd generation Cuban of refugees so its kind of a weird personal dilemma that I have to overcome.
If you ever get a chance to go back to Thailand can I recommend you go around the 3rd week in November and skip the south but head north to Chiang Mai for the Loy Krathong/Yi Peng festival…its truly unbelievable and that city is better than Bangkok in my opinion!
